Admissions Policy
Prospective students are assessed according to their academic background,
physical and financial fitness to attend school, personal testimony for the Lord
Jesus Christ, and evidence of their Christian faith. In considering
applications, the Office of Admissions reviews the prospective student?s
complete record, recommendations, and personal information. If prospective
students meet the required standard, they are admitted to HTS until they
complete their program.
Transfer Students
Students transferring to HTS from other Bible institutes, colleges, universities
or seminaries must send transcripts of their college-level work directly to the
Director of Admissions of HTS. Transcripts will be evaluated in terms of the
curriculum at HTS, and credit will be allowed whenever equivalent courses have
been taken elsewhere. Work completed with a grade below C is not transferable.
The transfer student should note that a full year of residency (32 semester
hours for undergraduate students, 18 semester hours for graduate students) is
required for graduation.
Policy of Non-Discrimination
Hawai`i Theological Seminary is committed to ensuring that all individuals have
equal access to programs, facilities, admission, and employment without regard
to personal characteristics not related to ability, performance, or
qualifications as determined by HTS and/or the University System of the State of
Hawai`i policy, by federal, state, or local authorities. HTS does not
discriminate against any person on the basis of race, age, religion, color,
gender, marital status or veteran status.
Re-Admission
A student who has left a program of study at Hawai`i Theological Seminary for
more than two semesters will be considered for re-entry only after a letter
of request has been submitted to the Registrar's Office prior to the opening of
the current semester.
Students who do not complete a course at Hawai`i Theological Seminary for one
calendar year will come under the jurisdiction of the new catalog for the
academic year in which they re-enroll. Students remain under the catalog for the
year in which they entered as long as at least one course is taken each academic
year for up to seven years.
Those who have been dismissed from Hawai`i Theological Seminary for academic
reasons are readmitted on a case-to-case basis. Such decisions are made by the
Admissions Committee, which takes into consideration the following criteria: (1)
A "Statement of Intent" filed by the student and the means to be used to achieve
academic goals, and/or (2) satisfactory records of subsequent educational work
at other colleges.
Course Repeat Policy
Students who want to repeat a course in order to have the first grade removed
from their cumulative GPA must satisfy each of the following guidelines:
1. Any course taken at Hawai`i Theological Seminary in which the student earned the grade
of "D" or "F" may be repeated at Hawai`i Theological Seminary.
2. The second grade will apply toward the student?s cumulative GPA, even if it is lower
than the first grade.
3. A maximum of 12 semester hours bay be repeated in a BA program, 9 hours in an MDiv
program, and 3 hours in an MAR program.
4. The grade deleted from the computation of the student?s cumulative GPA will not count
toward hours attempted or completed, but the course will remain on the student?s
transcript.
& 5. The deleted grade will be changed to "R" on the transcript.
Directed Studies
Some courses at Hawai`i Theological Seminary are available to qualified students
who desire to study a topic on an individual basis. Students meet with the
instructor only for progress evaluation and direction. It is generally
understood that work for directed studies will be completed within the semester,
as is the case of regularly scheduled courses. Directed study courses are
generally not available during any semester in which that course is offered as a
regular class, unless the student is experiencing a military deployment or
prolonged illness that prohibits attendance in the regularly scheduled class. A
total of six semester hours may be taken as directed studies for any HTS degree
program.
Summer Courses
Summer session provides students with the opportunity for a greater degree of
flexibility in planning their total program. Visiting students find it
refreshing to study for the summer in a different atmosphere and locale.
Entering students find it helpful in gaining an early start on their degree
progress. Certain courses and workshops may be offered that are not listed in
the catalog. The course content may be in response to specialized needs or
current topics or the availability of a visiting professor with a unique
academic specialty. Requests for summer session and admission applications
should be addressed to the admissions office. Special admission to the summer
program does not grant acceptance to Hawai`i Theological Seminary for the
regular school year. |
